#1. 2023-2024 UNCF Ladders of Hope Scholarship
Are you a Black/African-American college freshman residing in Southern Los Angeles? UNCF’s Ladders of Hope Scholarship offers 17 need-based awards, up to $5,000.
Application opens on 12/18/2023, with a deadline of 2/20/2024 at 4:00 PM EST.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Black/African-American college freshman at a UNCF member institution.
- GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
- Complete the FAFSA form.
- Demonstrated unmet need verified by college/university.
- Permanent resident of South Los Angeles with qualifying zip codes.
Application Requirements:
- Apply by 2/6/2024 through UNCF’s online portal.
- Write an essay on “How will you use your education to make South Los Angeles an even better community?”
- Provide one (1) non-family letter of recommendation.
Renewal Requirements:
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.
- Stay enrolled full-time and in good academic standing.
- Demonstrate continued unmet financial need.
- Complete the FAFSA form annually.
Recommendation Guidance:
- One LOR is required, not from a family member.
- The recommender submits LOR through UNCF’s online system.

#2. Dr. Joseph A. Towles African Study Abroad Scholarship.
Open to students at UNCF institutions, this scholarship offers up to $10,000. Apply by 2/12/2024 at 8:00 PM EST for a chance to explore Africa’s rich cultures.
Eligibility:
- UNCF institution student.
- Enrolled in an accredited study abroad program during the Spring 2024 Semester.
Application Requirements:
- Complete application sections.
- Submit two essays, current transcript, resume, study abroad program details, and two reference letters.
- Decisions are announced via email within 10-12 weeks of the deadline.
#2. 2023-2024 Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr. Scholarship Program
A renewable merit-based scholarship, offering $5,500, is available for students at UNCF member institutions, HBCUs, or accredited four-year institutions.
Apply by 2/20/2024 at 6:00 PM EST.
Eligibility:
- Reside or be a permanent resident in specific geographic locations.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Application Requirements:
- Online application.
- One-page essay on career interests.
